Raising and Teaching Tomorrow's Citizens

This is a picture I actually took yesterday. I was telling a friend tonight how impressed I have been with our students' patriotism and respect this year. We talked about our Veterans Day celebration, our flag retirement, and our recent choir program.
I love teaching the students about respect for our flag, then watching them fold it properly and with respect each afternoon. I loved the gasp of a student when we raised our brand new flag for the first time this year, "Oh! It's SO beautiful!" I was moved to tears last  week when our entire student body of over six hundred 3-to-10-year-olds stood up, hands over their hearts, faced the flag and sang every word of The Star Spangled Banner with respect, without fidgeting, whining, or goofing off. We say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem every Monday as a school, and I know that the Pledge is said everyday in many, if not all, of the classrooms.
It is a tall order to be charged with preparing our nation's future citizens. But if my experiences are any indication, I'd say we're on the right track.
